It happens on the water all the time in Pensacola. A phone slips off a boat, out of a pocket at the beach, or into the pool at the Flora-Bama. The good news is that a wet phone is not automatically a dead phone. What you do in the first few minutes makes a real difference, and one popular piece of advice actually makes things worse.
The first few minutes matter most
Water damage is not usually the water itself. It is the corrosion that starts as the water sits on the circuit board and dries. That process begins right away and keeps going for hours and days. The faster the internals get cleaned and dried out properly, the better the odds of saving the phone and the photos on it. Speed is the single biggest factor in how these turn out.
What to do right now
- Turn the phone off if it is still on, and leave it off.
- Do not plug it in or try to charge it. Power plus water is how you short out a board that might otherwise have been fine.
- Shake the visible water out of the charging port and speakers, gently.
- Dry the outside with a towel and leave it somewhere cool and dry.
- Get it to a repair shop as soon as you can. Sooner is always better.
Skip the rice. Really.
Putting a wet phone in a bag of rice is the most common advice out there, and it does not work. Rice does not pull moisture out of sealed components, and while your phone sits in that bag for two days, corrosion is spreading across the board the whole time. All the rice really does is waste the hours that matter most. A trained tech can open the device, clean the board, and stop the corrosion. Rice cannot do any of that.
Salt water is harder than fresh water
If your phone went into the Gulf or the bay, the clock is even tighter. Salt water is far more corrosive than pool or tap water, so it eats at the internal components faster. It is still worth trying, plenty of Gulf-dunked phones come back, but do not wait it out. The longer salt sits on the board, the less there is to save.
Bring it in and we will take a look
At The Tech Handyman, water damage repair is something we handle every week during beach season, not an afterthought. We open the device, clean the board, and tell you honestly what is recoverable and what it will cost before we start any work. If the phone itself cannot be saved but your photos and contacts can, we also do data recovery so you do not lose what mattered on it.
We are walk-in friendly, Monday through Friday, 10am to 6pm, at 6224 N 9th Ave #6 in Pensacola. If your phone just got wet, do not wait for it to dry on its own. Come see us and give it the best shot.
